Go to a museum and you’re likely to overhear someone say,
my kid could do that or,
I could do that! or
This is art?
How is art defined? By curators, critics, or just your own personal opinion? Is it valuable because it can fetch a large sum at auction, or because it has gone viral and is well known? Does it have to wow you because it reflects great patience, great skill, or great ideas?
Art is:
“…Thoughtful noticing that triggers a thoughtful noticing in somebody else…”
Taking this definition, the history of art = the history of people noticing the world around them.
Art is an important undertaking
Yes. Your kid could do that, because kids notice the world until they are trained to become jaded adults.
Yes. You can do it too, if you go back to noticing and want to make a few marks or remarks about it.
Yes. it is art – and it is necessary.
